Question:

What is role of jivatma in this universe as I am a jivatma could you please guide me on characteristics of jivatma and how to live in this universe. Also please let me know the disadvantages of jivatma.

Answer:

Well, there’s no disadvantage of being a jīvātmā. Even if there is, there’s no way not to be a jīvātmā. Because acchedyo ‘yam akledyo ‘yam aśoṣya, jīva… You can’t destroy the jīva. The role of the jīvātmā in this universe is to… We’re in this universe to forget Kṛṣṇa. But it’s not a good thing to do. So, the best thing is to become Kṛṣṇa conscious and get out of this universe. The characteristics of the jīva: jīvera svarūpa haya kṛṣṇera nitya-dāsa. The characteristic of the jīva is that he is an eternal servant of Kṛṣṇa. How to live in this universe? Gṛhe thāko, vane thāko, sadā ‘hari’ bole’ ḍāko. Whatever situation you’re in, chant the holy name of Kṛṣṇa. For more guidance, read Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books. Read all of his books. And for practical guidance on how to be Kṛṣṇa conscious, see that Beginner’s Guide to Kṛṣṇa Consciousness.

Why I Don't Give Brahminical Initiation Easily

1) We see that Srila Prabhupada gave pancaratriki initiation (braminical) to many devotees without taking in consideration if the devotees were employed by some karmi neither if they had a braminical background. Maharaja, you are very strict in following Srila Prabhupada. Why is that you have those policies to give second initiation?

2) I've heard (maybe even in one of your lectures or in conversations with your disciples) that you won't be giving second initiation to those working for other people (having a sudra occupation). Recently, I was asked to speak to bhakti-school students in the temple about the desire for second initiation and I also came across quotes, saying that chanting the Gayatri mantra gradually delivers one from the material clutches (CC Madhya 8.138) and even more, unless one is initiated as a brahmana, one cannot worship the holy name properly. Why, then, second initiation isn't given more freely, considering only the qualities of a disciple and not his ways of maintenance as well or the need of second initiation for service only?

Question:

My name is Jayapatni Gopi dasi and I have been in the movement and a disciple of Jayapataka Swami most of the time since 1980. I serve here at New Talavana Farm in Mississippi.

In the late 80's, I was raising four young children all born within a span of eight years. I was dealing with my elderly dad who was alone, and had had a bad habit of drinking for many years. He had caused drunk driving accidents, but due to Krsna's mercy had not hurt anyone except
himself.

I made a decision when I moved to New Talavana not to give him my address, because he lived 2 1/2 hours away and I feared he would spend most of his time on the highway driving back and forth to and from his house to mine.

I now am plagued with guilt and remorse for the totally isolated life he lead for the last three years of his life. He was totally alone in a cabin in the woods in the backwoods of Mississippi. He often told me how distressed he was. We went to see him once a month and brought prasadam. If I had it to do over I would trust in Krsna to help me and attempt to have him here doing some menial service for the farm. He liked mowing.

I feared I couldn't care for my four infant children and also be cognizant enough to deal with him and my husband commuted to work and was rarely here to help us. I have had two shrada ceremonies and intend to have another one performed in October, but my thoughts are almost constantly haunted by his distress during those years. He died in 1991, and this doesn't seem to be getting any better for me. We were very close.
