Stop Abusing Yourself

August 19, 2011 |

Question: How can a devotee, who has suffered mental trauma due to molestation by perverted elements within an asrama and negligence of superiors in the past, overcome his condition and fully engage in devotional service? What should he do if he has repeated fall downs due to depression? Can such a devotee progress in the previous association and how can he rid himself of ill-feeling against his superiors?

Question:

How do we really make a distinction between nitya siddha and sadhana siddha jivas?

Despite them being two different by definition obviously, their pastimes on the earth, their qualities and potency, is there any difference, are those things the same?

Could you say, those who are Sadhana Siddha do not exercise/expose as much spiritual potency as Nitya Siddha jivas, or that sadhana siddhas do not have as much extent of spiritual influence?

Generally, Prabhupada has said the previous acharyas (Bhaktisiddhanta, Bhaktivinode) are Nitya Siddha, therefore, is it correct to deduce only those who are acharyas are nitya, and everyone else is sadhana siddha?

Sometimes, with an acharya we know is nitya siddha, Bhaktvinode Thakur for example, it may appear he was formerly materialistic then by Sadhana became Siddha, Prabhupada has stated otherwise so we accept that as the truth, therefore it is difficult to distinguish between the two, as even if they are actually sadhana siddha they have pastimes appearing as if they were worldly.

Mercy or Own Effort

Question: How does anartha nivrtti happens? Only through one's own efforts or it happens only due to mercy of guru and Krishna? Or both? On our own, we find it difficult to give up certain habits or certain non devotional activities. Living out side the temple (away from devotees) worsen the situation. Ones own efforts save him or only mercy?

Question:

I have a doubt in my mind, and you could most likely solve it.

Sannyasa is the highest ashram and generally the sannyasis are respected as being; as good as God by other sections. I hear stories about Prabhupada offering sannyasa to many of his devotees, and many of them could not maintain it.

During the early stages of the Krishna Conscious movement, was Prabhupada very careful in choosing candidates for Sannyasa? I hear stories that sometimes many of the devotees were given Sannyasa on a single day and were asked to go out and preach (please correct me if I am wrong).

Is the spiritual master supposed to understand the possible frailties of his disciples very carefully and give instructions only according to the disciple’s capacity? I hear this argument that the strength to carry on the instruction is imparted with the instruction itself.

Is it possible that the spiritual master may give an instruction, but if he is not very helpful to the disciple then the disciple has to take a simpler instruction for himself after the failure?

How does giving instructions work in the current context? We have many madhyama bhaktas acting as leaders, so are we supposed to check with others when there are strict instructions (other than chanting and regulative principles) and strong ideas presented that are directly not in Prabhupada's books - like preaching, program building etc.?
