Continuing Bhakti in Adverse Health Conditions

April 4, 2011 |

Question: How can we attain Krishna consciousness if our health deteriorates very badly?… Expand>

Question:

How can we attain Krishna consciousness if our health deteriorates very badly?

Answer by HH Bhakti Vikāsa Swami:

It may be difficult if one’s health is very bad over a long period of time to perform sādhana bhakti, which… It requires some level of health and clear-mindedness. So, it may be very difficult, but if we do get in that condition anyway we should pray to Kṛṣṇa to help us [do] the best we can. And if we are sincere, Kṛṣṇa will appreciate our prayers. Ultimately, Kṛṣṇa consciousness transcends all conditions, but in our present condition it may be very difficult for us to appreciate that. But nevertheless, in whatever state of health, if we try to associate with the devotees, chant the holy names of Kṛṣṇa, study Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books as best as we can, then Śrīla Prabhupāda will help us. And that’s all for now, because all of you are going on harināma saṅkīrtana on the beach to benefit all of conditioned souls. That is the ultimate solution —

Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare/Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare.

Nāca, gāo, bhakta-saṅge kara saṅkīrtana/kṛṣṇa-nāma upadeśi’ tāra’ sarva-jana:
dance, sing and perform congregational chanting of the holy name of Kṛṣṇa in the association of devotees, and, by instructing the holy name to others, deliver all the people. So, that’s the ultimate solution. Otherwise, the material world, especially in Kali-yuga is very, very difficult, getting more and more confused day by day. Chant the holy names. Hare Kṛṣṇa.

All right, we’ll finish there for now. All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda!

Relevance of Srila Prabhupada's Letters

Question:

When reading Srila Prabhupada’s instructions through letters, how should one tell to himself that the instructions hold good for him too (with abject humility I say here that I am not questioning Srila Prabhupada, his instructions are very much relevant to the jivas, to the every atom in the universe) and not just to the said person in question. Sometimes if someone says, ‘oh, that was between Srila Prabhupada and the said person’ how should we reply that 'no, that also holds good for us too.’ Is there a quote from Srila Prabhupada to answer this question? I heard Srila Prabhupada talked about an analogy of sun in this context.

Audio answer by HH Bhakti Vikasa Swami:

Well, not every instruction of Śrīla Prabhupāda in his letters is meant for everyone. Some of them are personal instructions. This question, the answer to it can be understood in detail by reading the prefatory note, or essay, in the Vedabase, given by His Holiness Jayādvaita Swami, about how to use or utilise the instructions in the Vedabase. That sum of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s instructions is for all times, places and circumstances. Man-manā bhava mad-bhakto, that’s Kṛṣṇa’s instructions. That’s for anyone in any time, place and circumstance. Others are not. Just like when… Or here is a good example, Kṛṣṇa tells Arjuna mām anusmara, that’s an instruction for anyone in any time, place and circumstance, but yudhya ca - fight, that’s not for everyone.

So Śrīla Prabhupāda’s instructions also, there are general instructions for everyone, and specific instructions for specific individuals. So how to understand what’s for you through the whole mass of instructions given by Śrīla Prabhupāda, a very large body of instructions? Well, therefore one has to take guidance in spiritual life, personal guidance. It’s not that you can understand everything just by reading the books ourselves. If you read the books you’ll find that ... Well, Śrīla Prabhupāda writes in a Bhagavad-gītā purport, I’m paraphrasing here, don’t know the words exactly, but says that no one can advance properly in Kṛṣṇa consciousness without taking personal guidance from a spiritual master. Don’t remember that? Some very crucial statements.

Conflict Among Devotees – Part 1

June 26, 2011 |

Question: I have experienced that there is conflict between devotees serving under different leaders: many devotees consider their own service or approach to bhakti as the most authentic, and associating with different genres of devotees sometimes creates confusion in my mind. Why does this conflict emerge although all devotees are engaged in service of Krishna? How can we overcome conflict and instead cooperate to fight against our common enemies, impersonalism and materialism.

Why Sayujya is Considered As One Kind of Mukti

Question:

The goal of a Gaudiya Vaishnava is "Prema Bhakti", but out of the 5 types of mukti, for sayujya-mukti—we  use the pramana “aruhya krccrena param padam tatha, patanty adho anadrta yusmad anghrayah” (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.2.32) to provide evidence that sayuja-mukti is not a permanent type of mukti. If this is the case, why is it considered one of the types of mukti? My understanding of “mukti” here is based on the definition from Bhagavat 2.10.6 – muktir hitva anyatha rupam svarupena vyavasthitih.
