Glorification Turns to Blasphemy …

January 1, 2011 |

Question: Could you please speak something regarding the verse and purport of CC Madhya-lila 10.182, in which Srila Prabhupada writes that "The Lord herein confirms that if one is overestimated, glorification is just another form of blasphemy." It seems like a very deep statement, and significant, but it is difficult to understand properly.

Statements of Srila Prabhupada That Defy Common Sense

Question:

How do we understand the statements of Srila Prabhupada that defy common sense?
My question is not specific to what I could eat to make my body happy, but "how do we understand statements by pure devotees that defy common sense?" One might be able to explain away sentences such as in the purport of CC 2.4.169 Srila Prabhupada mentions that, "One should not eat fish or other non-vegetarian food during the month of Kartika. A non-vegetarian diet means fish and meat. Similarly, masura dhal and urad dhal are also considered non-vegetarian. These two dhals contain a great amount of protein, and food rich in protein is considered non-vegetarian," however if you have to give to an intelligent reader they defy common sense. So, then comes the question of hermeneutics. In our parampara, it is not just important to understand the scriptures, but the writings of acaryas such as Srila Prabhupada. I refuse to compromise myself saying that some parts of Srila Prabhupada's writings from which I can't extract sense from should be avoided.

A Society Made of Brahmanas

Question:

I am currently listening to your lecture "Some Concerns About ISKCON." I also heard a lecture recently from my spritual master HH Tamal Krishna Goswami. He said, "originally, Srila Prabhupada wanted ISKCON to consist solely of brahmacaris and sannyasis, but then Jadurani came, what was Srila Prabhupada to do? He couldn't reject her."

It seems that since we do not discriminate who joins ISKCON in terms of their varna or ashram, ISKCON will continue to face these sorts of issues (i.e. Ksatriya Initiative).

My question: Although I understand that we are ultimately only concerned with becoming Vaishnavas, but do you forsee that ISKCON as a society will gradually evolve into strictly a brahminical body as Srila Prabhupada wanted or will the brahminical class be forced to create a seperate body to offer guidance to society? Thank you for maintaining the standard.
