Girls Arranging their own Marriage

Question:

Is it acceptable for a girl, whose parents don’t arrange her marriage, to arrange her own marriage by meeting different men and working it out like that?

Answer by HH Bhakti Vikāśa Swami:

According to Manu-saṁhitā it is the duty of the father to marry a daughter before her first menstruation.

And Manu also says that after, I think it’s two menstrual periods or maybe three, if the father hasn’t done that, then the girl can arrange her own marriage.

The emphasis is very much on what they nowadays call child marriage. Śrīla Prabhupāda recounts that his eldest sister was almost 14 and she was not married, and that their mother was so upset that she told their father that: “If you don’t marry her right away I’m going to drown myself in Ganga.“

Śrīla Prabhupāda’s first child was born when his wife was 13. Nowadays it’s called child abuse.
So, it’s acceptable according to śāstra. You’ve asked according to śāstra. I’ve answered according to śāstra.

Gradually it’s become accepted within Indian culture that girls go to school, and then they have a career, but still there is idea that parents should arrange the marriage. But that’s breaking down now.

Still, maybe most marriages in India are arranged, but it’s breaking down. Thousands and thousands of marriages are negotiated on the Internet. They have sites shaadi.com. Shaadi is Urdu word for marriage. Muslimmatrimony.com is an Indian site.

Is Everything Predecided?

November 28, 2011 |

Question: Krishna says in Bhagavad-gita that He knows past, present, and future. If everything is predecided then why we should try to get Krishna. Krishna says in Bhagavad-gita that He knows past, present, and future. If everything is predecided then why we should try to get Krishna. In other words, if everything is already predecided then what is the point of trying to become Krishna conscious. When my time will come, then I will automatically become Krishna conscious. Before that, even if I would try still I can't become Krishna conscious because everything is already predecided, like Ramayana is written before Lord Rama descended. Please clarify my doubt.

Is Srila Prabhupada Tri-kala jna?

November 28, 2013 |

Question: Is Srila Prabhupada tri-kala jna? Srila Prabhupada has been described as a saktyavesa-avatara (by Srila Sridhara Maharaja). Question:

Is Srila Prabhupada tri-kala jna?

Srila Prabhupada has been described as a saktyavesa-avatara (by Srila Sridhara Maharaja). It has also been described, I believe by Srila Prabhupada himself, that he was a very pious doctor in his previous life. This devotee was thinking that all saktyavesa-avataras are descending from the spiritual world, from their previous life and that they would not have had a previous birth here. It may be argued that some of Caitanya Mahaprabhu's closest assocaiates, like Murari Gupta were Ayurvedic doctors, so this type of occupation or birth does not minimize their divinity in any way. Any comments on this?

Condemn Modern Civilization, But Use Modern Amenities

August 29, 2011 |

Question: My question is that Srila Prabhupad used to blaspheme for all new developments but we are utilizing all the modern items for our day to day use nowadays like — staying in a big building, travelling through airplane, using modern equipments for our health… how we do counteract when people ask that one way you are condemning modern civilization but in other than you are using the modern utilities…
