Ksatriyas should punish bogus brahmanas

Brahmanas' another name is suci, always cleansed. Similarly arjavam, simplicity. Brahmana's life should be very simple. They should not imitate the ksatriyas and the vaisyas and the sudras....

Ksatriya must be always prepared, and if required, to fight also, whether people are keeping their own principle of religion. That is ksatriya's duty. He, if [a] brahmana is bluffing people, that "I am brahmana," but he is acting as a sudra, immediately ksatriya should point out and offer him fight, "Why you are cheating people? Why you are cheating people?" Similarly, a ksatriya is declaring himself that "I am ksatriya," but he's acting as a sudra, it is the ksatriya's or the government's duty, that, "Why you are cheating people?"

So a ksatriya's business is always prepared to fight. Fight means that to see that everyone is acting nicely. Because if you are not acting nicely, and if I say that "You are not acting nicely," you'll be angry. Upadeso hi murkhanam prakopaya na santaye. Because if one is actually brahmana, he must act as a brahmana. So if somebody says that "You are declaring yourself as brahmana but you are not following the brahmana principle," he will be angry. But a ksatriya's duty is that if he is angry, he should be punished immediately.

We take care of every part of the whole, as much as one should take care of his hat as well as his shoes. Both are equally important for the upkeep of the body. So messenger came and informed that "The king has come. So he is asking to open the door." The queen replied, "Who is king? Yasomanta Sena. No, no. Yasomanta Sena cannot come being defeated. Yasomanta Sena either he conquers the battle or he lays down his body there dead. So the man who has come, he must be somebody pretender. He is not King Yasomanta Sena." I was staying in the Calcutta temple. The temple president had somehow become preoccupied with doing business - for the temple, but doing business nonetheless - and he wasn't taking care of the devotees. Most of the devotees were quite disturbed. We weren't getting proper food, we were new in India, and we depended on the temple president to make many arrangements for us. The devotees were just waiting for Srila Prabhupada to come. When Srila Prabhupada did come, many devotees approached him and complained about the conditions in the temple and about the temple president. Eventually Srila Prabhupada called a meeting with all the devotees, and he heard all of their complaints. He listened very sympathetically, very patiently, and then he made a managerial arrangement. He formed a committee, and he said that the committee should meet every week and that whatever they decided should be recorded in a book that everyone should sign. And then, whatever they decided, they should do. But then Srila Prabhupada's mood changed and he started talking about his own struggles - and I would say his own sufferings - in bringing Krsna consciousness to the West and spreading Krsna consciousness: two heart attacks; some buzzing in his brain in New York, as he explained it; and suffering in so many ways to spread Krsna consciousness. "I don't even wish to discuss how much I suffered," Srila Prabhupada said, "but I never complained because my policy was always 'Everything for Krsna and nothing for myself.'"

But the husband has fallen down to so much poverty-stricken condition. "So why shall I live with him?" These are some of the extreme examples of chastity. Not to speak of olden days, I have seen in Bombay, in 1935 or '34, on the roadside, there was a beggar. The beggar, the face was defaced. Might be some accident. His eyes and everything became defaced. He could not see, everything became useless. So he, he was sitting on the roadside, and his wife also, also sitting. But I saw that beggar was neat and clean. The wife was also neat and clean. The wife's business was that to keep the husband always neat and clean and fresh and bring him there and again take him at home. Young woman. So I could understand that the wife is so chaste. She has not left such ugly husband. Because his face was defaced. And helping him. Because they require some money.

Therefore to become pure or to understand the essence of purity is very confidential. It is not to be acquired by our own efforts, by argument or by being expert in scripture or by becoming a philosopher or a similar way. It is very confidential. Then how? Mahajano yena gatah sa panthah [Cc. Madhya 17.186]. You have to follow a pure devotee, acknowledged devotee. Similarly, in the Bhagavad-gita, if we follow Arjuna, then we understand Bhagavad-gita as it is. But if we don't follow Arjuna, if we follow somebody, Dr. Frog, or create our own interpretation, then we remain impure. So mahajano yena gatah sa panthah. We have to follow the footprints of mahajana, great soul.

This is confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita (4.9): tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti so 'rjuna. Because during his lifetime a pure devotee is always speaking of Krsna and engaging in His service, as soon as he gives up his body he immediately returns to Goloka Vrndavana, where Krsna is personally present. Not that these general people, they are thinking, "If war, there is no war, then we shall be very happy." How you'll stop your war with maya? Maya has declared war with you, or you have declared war with maya. Daivi hy esa gunamayi mama maya duratyaya [Bg. 7.14]. The maya, the material nature is enforcing, "Why you are closing this door?" "Oh, because it is very cold outside." Who is forcing? Immediately there will be cold, immediately there will be fog, immediately there will be excessive heat, immediately there may be earthquake. How you can stop it? So they simply think... Long before, I wrote one letter to Mahatma Gandhi, perhaps in the year 1946, requesting him to preach the gospel of Bhagavad gitaas it is. Now somehow or other your people have attained independence, you can retire from this politics and take to the business of preaching Bhagavad-gita as it is." Unfortunately, I did not receive any reply from him. He was so busy.

The fact is that since a very long time, I was thinking that throughout the whole world there are so many parties for political emancipation, which is only temporary thing, but there is no party representing Krsna, or the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That was my dream, that if Lenin and other big, big political leaders, they could form their party, why not Bhagavad-gita, or the followers of the Bhagavad-gita, or the devotees of Lord Krsna do form a party to preach this Krsna consciousness movement all over the world? That was my ambition.

But I tried to start this movement in India. I saw Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, I saw President Radhakrishnan, I saw Lal Behari Sastri, many prominent men, and requested them that this is Indian original culture -- Krsna consciousness -- and if we present this Krsna consciousness movement in its right form, people will accept it and the whole world will be benefited. But... Of course I was sympathetically received by Lal Behari Sastri. He was very much sympathetic with me. And our President Radhakrishnan, he promised that, "Swamiji, maybe after retirement I shall join you." Anyway, I could not get any help either from the politicians or from any other party. Then I decided that I should go to America. And I was dreaming that if the American people will accept this Krsna consciousness movement, maybe our Indian brothers may follow them.

So I went to America in 1965, September, alone...

Even if you chant the holy name unconsciously or in joking it has that effect." Prabhupada was saying, "Hm." So I said, "Prabhupada, is this really true? Is it really that powerful?" Prabhupada was smiling, he closed his eyes. He was in ecstasy actually. He closed his eyes and leaned his head back against the seat of the car. His head was all the way tilted back and he was smiling. He said, "Yes. Just see how Lord Caitanya has made it so cheap." We were actually astonished that Prabhupada confirmed so authoritatively that yes, the power of the holy name is so great. You should have no doubt.

Chanting: the best sacrifice

Of all the sacrifices mentioned in the Vedic literatures, the performance of sankirtana-yajna is the best. According to the author of Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, if one compares sankirtana yajna to other yajnas, he is a pasandi, an infidel, and is liable to be punished by Yamaraja. There are many Mayavadis who think that the performance of sankirtana-yajna is a pious activity similar to the performance of the asvamedha-yajna and other such pious functions, but this is a nama-aparadha. Chanting of the holy name of Narayana and chanting of other names are never equal, despite what Mayavadis think.

Similarly, if you chant this Hare Krsna mantra, then your first vision of your self, your constitutional position, will be visible just like a line of the moon. But if you go on continuing, you will find one day it is full moon and brilliant, very soothing, and nectarine. You'll taste your life as very sublime, blissful, and hopeful.

O mother earth, what austerity did you perform to attain the touch of Lord Kesava's lotus feet, which has brought you such great joy that your bodily hairs are standing on end? You appear very beautiful in this condition. Was it during the Lord's current appearance that you acquired this ecstatic symptom, or was it perhaps much earlier, when He stepped upon you in His form of the dwarf Vamanadeva, or even earlier, when He embraced you in His form of the boar Varahadeva?

Therefore Krsna is very much fond of Radharani, because She gives the best service to Krsna, in so many ways. She has got sixty-four qualifications.

I am glad that you have named your printing press the Radha Press. It is very gratifying and may your Radha Press be enriched in publishing all our books and literatures in the German language. It is a very nice name. Radharani is the best, topmost servitor of Krsna, and the printing machine is the biggest medium at the present moment for serving Krsna. Therefore, it is really a representative of Srimati Radharani. I like the idea very much.

If you want divine life, if you want spiritual elevation back to Godhead, back to home, that means eternal life, blissful life full of knowledge, then we have to train ourselves in divine consciousness or Krsna consciousness. That you can very easily do by association. You have worked sincerely the whole day, that is your credit. That's all. That's your credit. Krsna will see, bhava-grahi-janardana. Krsna wants to see that how much you are spending your valuable life and energy for Krsna. That's all. Don't be disappointed that many men are not coming here or we are very poorly pushing on. Never mind. Whatever Krsna has given us, chance, let us utilize it.

When you are helping my missionary activities I am always thinking of you and you are always thinking of me. That is real association. Just like I always think of my Guru Maharaja every moment, although He is not physically present, and because I am trying to serve Him to my best capacity, I am sure He is helping me by His spiritual blessings. So there are two kinds of association: physical and preceptorial. Physical association is not so important as preceptorial association.
