Then they went on preaching that just one chanting of the Hare Krsna mantra without offense can actually remove sinful reactions accumulated over millions of lifetimes. Even if you chant the holy name unconsciously or in joking it has that effect." Prabhupada was saying, "Hm." So I said, "Prabhupada, is this really true? Is it really that powerful?" Prabhupada was smiling, he closed his eyes. He was in ecstasy actually. He closed his eyes and leaned his head back against the seat of the car. His head was all the way tilted back and he was smiling. He said, "Yes. Just see how Lord Caitanya has made it so cheap." We were actually astonished that Prabhupada confirmed so authoritatively that yes, the power of the holy name is so great. You should have no doubt.

We should not feel pride in our charity, austerity, valor, scriptural knowledge, modesty or morality for gems are found all over the earth.

Commentary: What is the need for pride when there will always be someone better at whatever we can do? No better example of this verse can be seen than Srila Prabhupada who, finding no jewels in his homeland, set out with the shovel of his faith and determination to mine the jewels of Western shores. There he turned coal into diamonds and polished them into gemstones. Regarding the preservation of moral and spiritual assets as mentioned in this verse, the devotee ceaselessly cultivates humility, knowing well that all can be lost in a moment of unthinking pride.

No. Janma karma me divyam, yo janati tattvatah [Bg. 4.9]. That is the injunction in the Bhagavad-gita: "Anyone who understands Me, My transcendental activities, appearance and disappearance," anyone who can understand janma karma me divyam, yo janati tattvatah, "in truth." That requires philosophical understanding. Religion without philosophy is sentiment. Sentiment has no value. And philosophy without religion is mental speculation. That is also no value. Both of them should be combined. Religion should be combined with philosophy; then intelligent persons will stay with it.

Thereafter, Lord Sri Krsna created a misunderstanding between family members just to diminish the burden of the world. The soul is not getting spiritual food. Here, in this meeting, this is meant for giving to the starving spirit soul. And as soon as you get some spiritual food, then we become happy. [Srila Prabhupada instructs Achyutananda Das about Vedanta-sutra]

"The first sutra reads athato brahma jijnasa. Athata means 'now,' jijnasa means to inquire. 'Now we shall inquire into the Absolute Truth, Brahman.' So what does this now mean? Now that you have studied the Vedas; now that you have performed your duties as a brahmacari; now that you are serious in acquiring this knowledge; now that you have understood that impersonal and personal are in harmonious relationship; now that you have understood the eternal constitutional position of the spirit soul; now that you are fortunate to have had a good birth after passing through unlimited lifetimes as human, as animal, as plant, as demigod; now that you have come to this human form of life."

He pointed to me.

"Just like your father gave you the Gita when you were young. So you are not an ordinary person."

He closed his eyes and continued.

"Now that you have come into contact with a bona fide spiritual master; now that you are not hankering for material piety, wealth, sense gratification, or birth in the higher planets; now that you have set aside all other inquiries, you can inquire into Brahman."

He paused to say, "Just see how one word - now - can have so much meaning."

The world stood still, and so did I.

He continued: "Now we go to the next sutra: janmadyasya yatah. Janma means creation, source, and cause. Adi means -- it is the Sanskrit way of saying all the rest, etcetera. And adi means the original, the first. Krsna is the cause of all causes and all the rest. So, you can just imagine all the Vaikuntha planets, all the living entities, all the material energies, all the expansions of Vishnu. Pantheism says God does not create the universe; He becomes the universe. And we say that is all right, but it is incomplete, He becomes the universe and remains full in the balance in His own realm. He does not abandon His creations but accompanies them as the Purusha Avatars: Maha-Vishnu, Garbodakashayi Vishnu, and Kshirodakashayi Vishnu, or Paramatma. He is the source of all conscious beings in the spiritual worlds and the material worlds, from Brahma down to the insect.

"Then give up these four things: don't drink, don't have illicit sex, don't indulge in gambling and don't eat meat." He said, "Impossible!" He said, "Impossible. This is our life." So I was thinking that "As soon as I will prescribe these things, these boys, or these people of America, they will say, ‘Please go home.' " But it is Krsna's mercy. Here it is said, ahaituki. Nobody can understand how it has happened, but actually it has happened. How?

Simply I advised them to accept Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and worship Him. They have done it, and they have attained jnana and vairagya.

TEXT
Sometimes Krsna and Balarama would play on Their flutes, sometimes They would throw ropes and stones devised for getting fruits from the trees, sometimes They would throw only stones, and sometimes, Their ankle bells tinkling, They would play football with fruits like bael and amalaki. Sometimes They would cover Themselves with blankets and imitate cows and bulls and fight with one another, roaring loudly, and sometimes They would imitate the voices of the animals. In this way They enjoyed sporting, exactly like two ordinary human children.

PURPORT
Vrndavana is full of peacocks. Kujat-kokila-hamsa-sarasa-ganakirne mayurakule. The Vrndavana forest is always full of cuckoos, ducks, swans, peacocks, cranes and also monkeys, bulls and cows. So Krsna and Balarama used to imitate the sounds of these animals and enjoy sporting.

Srila Prabhupada said:

Similarly, when you remain fully surrendered to the supreme will, either in distress or in happiness, that is your happiness. That is real happiness. This condition cannot be without love. In any condition, you remain surrendered. It cannot be done without love. When there is lack of love, this kind of mentality cannot develop: "In any condition I shall remain surrendered." Just like, you are...you are...A whole society is carrying my order, not because I am superior person. There is love. Without love, you cannot do so. You have got some bit of love for me, therefore you carry my order. Otherwise it is not possible. And I cannot also. You are foreigners, you are Americans; I came from another country, I have no [bank] account. I cannot also order you: "You must do it, otherwise I will chastise you." Because there is love. It is a connection of love. I can also become bold enough to chastise you, but you also, in whatever condition you carry my order due to the basic principle is love. And our whole philosophy is love. We are just trying to learn how to love Krsna, that's all. So without the basic principle of love, these things cannot be conceived.

Rupa Gosvami has written the following verse: "My dear friend, if you still have any desire to enjoy the company of your friends within this material world, then don't look upon the form of Krsna, who is standing on the bank of Kesi-ghata [a bathing place in Vrndavana]. He is known as Govinda, and His eyes are very enchanting. He is playing upon His flute, and on His head there is a peacock feather. And His whole body is illuminated by the moonlight in the sky."
